The Byron Center Bulldogs delivered a dominant performance, sweeping the Skyline Eagles 3-0 in the quarterfinal round of the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division I volleyball playoffs that drew significant scrutiny in recent days. Despite the political storm surrounding the matchup, the Bulldogs dominated the court on their way to a win and berth into the state semifinal.
- With this win, Byron Center advances to its first state semifinal appearance in 32 years.
Byron Center’s offense was on full display throughout the match. The Bulldogs controlled the tempo early and didn’t allow Skyline to gain a foothold. The first set saw Byron Center jump out to an emphatic lead that didn’t let up until they had claimed the first set. Things started to settle into the flow in the second and third, but a dominant performance by BC middle, Kenna Deters, and a host of other Bulldogs made sure things were never in doubt.
Skyline, meanwhile, showed flashes of success, but couldn’t overcome the Bulldogs’ discipline and execution. With a season record of 36-11-4 going into the match, Skyline had bested quality programs, though not without controversy. But yesterday, they ran into a very strong Byron Center squad (38-5-3 entering the match) that was the superior team.
