PORTAGE — There are plenty of questions surrounding every football team when a new season begins. Caledonia didn’t need long Thursday night to provide the answer to at least one.
The Fighting Scots look ready to go.
Caledonia opened its 2026 season with an emphatic 48-12 road victory over Portage Northern, putting together one of the more convincing performances on the opening night of Michigan high school football.
The 36-point victory sent Caledonia home from Portage at 1-0 and provided an impressive opening statement for a program looking to once again contend among the state’s better teams.
The Scots entered the season with some outside expectations already attached to them. MaxPreps had Caledonia ranked No. 6 in Division 2 entering Week 1, and Thursday’s result did little to quiet the idea that the Scots could be a factor as the season progresses.
But preseason expectations only matter if a team eventually backs them up on the field.
Caledonia did that in its first opportunity.
Playing away from home against Portage Northern, the Scots piled up 48 points while limiting the Huskies to just 12. It was the kind of margin that immediately stands out on a crowded Week 1 scoreboard, particularly for a team beginning a season in which there is plenty still to be discovered.
The result also continued a run of success for Caledonia against Portage Northern. The programs met in the 2023 postseason, when Caledonia earned a 72-30 playoff victory over the Huskies.
Three years later, the Scots again walked away with a decisive win.
For Caledonia, however, Thursday was less about what happened in a previous season or a previous meeting and more about establishing a starting point for this one.
Week 1 can often be unpredictable. Teams are replacing graduated players, new starters are settling into larger roles and months of offseason preparation are finally being tested against an opponent wearing a different jersey.
Winning under those circumstances is the first objective.
Winning 48-12 on the road is something more.
Caledonia’s 48 points were among the higher offensive totals produced around West Michigan on a busy opening Thursday. Elsewhere, Byron Center defeated Hudsonville 41-20, DeWitt scored 59 in a victory over Kenowa Hills and several other programs around the state opened their seasons with similarly decisive performances.
For the Scots, the most important number is simply 1-0.
Portage Northern, meanwhile, begins the season 0-1 after surrendering 48 points in its home opener. The Huskies will try to regroup quickly with another significant west Michigan opponent ahead, traveling to face Mona Shores on Sept. 3 who had an impressive showing against OLSM that left them just outside the win column.
Caledonia leaves Portage in a much different position.
One game doesn’t define a football season, and the challenges will become considerably greater as the Scots eventually move into the heart of OK Red play. Rockford, Jenison, Hudsonville, Grandville, East Kentwood, Grand Haven and West Ottawa all appear on Caledonia’s conference schedule.
That gauntlet will reveal much more about just how good the 2026 Fighting Scots can become and a 48-12 road victory was about as convincing a first piece as Caledonia could have asked for.
