GRAND RAPIDS, MI — On May 22, 2025, the defending Division 2 state champion Grand Rapids Catholic Central girls lacrosse team delivered a commanding 15–3 victory over Spring Lake in the regional tournament opener at Catholic Central’s home field.
From the opening draw, the Cougars set the tone, surging ahead with relentless transition offense, sharp passing, and balanced scoring across their lineup. The early magic continued through the middle quarters, as Catholic Central piled on goals to build an insurmountable lead.
Spring Lake’s only offense came via midfielder Micah Garansky, who netted all three goals for the Lakers, efforts that stood out in a tough matchup against a veteran state champion group. Beyond Garansky’s contributions, Spring Lake struggled to create consistent offensive chances against a suffocating Catholic Central defense.
The win improved Catholic Central’s season record to 15–5 and advanced their postseason run into the regional semifinals, where they were slated to face Byron Center, another powerful squad coming off a dominant 15–3 victory over their opponent earlier in the bracket.
Catholic Central’s season, anchored by the offensive prowess of seniors Catherine Marshall (88 goals, 28 assists) and Lily Engstrom (86 goals, 32 assists), as well as the steady play of goalkeeper Samaya Dean, who boasts a goals-against average around 6.55 and a .525 save percentage, continues to reflect why they remain one of the elite programs in Michigan Division 2.
As the Cougars prepare to take on Byron Center in the next round, confidence is high in their aim to repeat their 2024 state championship feat. With a deep, experienced roster and postseason execution that has been near flawless, Grand Rapids Catholic Central looks every bit the favorites as the playoffs intensify.
