HUDSONVILLE — At some point, sustained excellence becomes difficult to put into perspective.

One championship is memorable.

Two in a row establishes something.

Three begins to look like a dynasty.

Four?

Four demands a different conversation entirely.

Two months removed from the final game of the 2026 girls soccer season, what Unity Christian accomplished last spring looks even more remarkable than it did in the moment.

The Crusaders went 24-0.

They allowed one goal all season.

They won conference, district and regional championships.

They completed the entire state tournament without conceding a goal.

And on June 13 at Michigan State University’s DeMartin Stadium, Unity Christian defeated Bloomfield Hills Marian 2-0 to capture the Division 2 state championship.

It was the Crusaders’ fourth consecutive state title.

Their 14th overall.

And it completed one of the most dominant seasons in the history of Michigan high school girls soccer.

The Standard Was Already Almost Impossible

Unity Christian entered 2026 in an unusual position.

There wasn’t much left for the program to prove.

The Crusaders had won state championships in 2023, 2024 and 2025. The previous spring, they had gone 22-0-2 and beaten New Boston Huron 7-0 in the Division 2 final to capture the 13th championship in program history.

That title had already broken the MHSAA record.

So what do you do for an encore?

Apparently, you get better.

Unity didn’t lose a match in 2026.

It didn’t tie one, either.

The Crusaders won all 24.

More remarkably, opponents almost never scored.

Unity allowed exactly one goal during the entire season, matching an MHSAA record originally established by Livonia Stevenson in 1997.

One goal.

Twenty-four matches.

And that lone goal didn’t come in the postseason.

Once the tournament began, the door closed completely.

Again.

A Postseason Standard Unlike Anything Else

To understand what Unity Christian accomplished in 2026, it helps to look beyond one season.

The Crusaders didn’t allow a postseason goal in 2023.

They didn’t allow one in 2024.

They didn’t allow one in 2025.

Then they entered the 2026 tournament and did it again.

Six matches.

Six shutouts.

By the time the final whistle sounded at Michigan State, Unity Christian had gone 24 consecutive MHSAA tournament matches without allowing a goal.

That’s four entire state championship runs.

Not four games.

Not four rounds.

Four tournaments.

Opponents had spent four consecutive postseasons trying to find a way through the Unity Christian defense.

None had.

The Road Back

For all the history surrounding the program, the 2026 tournament wasn’t simply a ceremonial march back to Michigan State.

Unity still had to get through West Michigan.

The Crusaders opened district play with a 5-0 victory over Holland Christian.

Then came Zeeland East in the district championship.

This one wasn’t easy.

Zeeland East pushed the defending champions for 80 minutes, but Unity found the goal it needed and protected it.

Unity Christian 1, Zeeland East 0.

Another district championship.

The regional round provided more separation.

Unity defeated Vicksburg 7-0 before shutting out Gull Lake 3-0 to win another regional title.

That sent the Crusaders into the state semifinal against Forest Hills Central.

By then, Unity was no longer simply trying to win another championship.

The numbers were beginning to become difficult to ignore.

The undefeated record.

The defensive streak.

The possibility of four straight.

Forest Hills Central couldn’t stop it.

Unity won 2-0.

For the fourth consecutive season, the Crusaders were headed to the state championship game.

Two Giants Meet at Michigan State

The final provided a matchup worthy of the moment.

Bloomfield Hills Marian wasn’t an upstart simply happy to be there.

The Mustangs entered the championship game 21-3.

They had won nine state championships.

Unity had won 13.

Two of the most decorated girls soccer programs in Michigan history were meeting with a championship on the line.

And Marian nearly did something no opponent had done to Unity Christian in the postseason since 2022.

Score.

About 30 minutes into the first half, Marian junior Nia Bordogna sent a shot off the underside of the crossbar.

The ball dropped near the goal line.

Unity goalkeeper Payton Barendsen secured it.

No goal.

For a few moments, the championship — and one of the most remarkable defensive streaks in MHSAA history — had been inches from changing.

It didn’t.

Five minutes later, Unity scored.

Senior Kiersten Witte made a run toward the Marian goal and collided with defenders near the net. The loose ball found junior Myla Obande.

The net was open.

Obande finished it.

1-0 Unity Christian.

Three minutes before halftime, the Crusaders struck again.

Junior Kyla Kobrzycki broke into open space and sent a shot off the right post. Senior Tessa Ponstein was there for the rebound.

2-0.

That’s where the score stayed.

Forty Minutes From Perfection

Marian didn’t go quietly.

The Mustangs forced Unity to defend throughout the second half and made Barendsen work to preserve the shutout.

She did.

Barendsen finished with five saves, including two diving stops during the second half.

In front of her, Avery Dekker, Ava Steen, Karli Rose and Ruthie Hall anchored a back line that had spent an entire season making scoring against Unity Christian feel nearly impossible.

Eventually, the clock reached zero.

Unity Christian 2, Bloomfield Hills Marian 0.

Twenty-four wins.

Zero losses.

Zero ties.

One goal allowed.

State champions.

Again.

Four Years, Zero Postseason Goals

Championship No. 14 added another trophy to a collection that was already the largest in Michigan girls soccer history.

But the numbers surrounding this particular run deserve to stand on their own.

Unity Christian finished 24-0.

The Crusaders recorded 23 shutouts.

They allowed one goal all season.

They ended the year with a 55-match unbeaten streak dating to May 22, 2024.

They won their second consecutive Division 2 championship after winning Division 3 in 2023 and 2024.

And for the fourth consecutive year, they played six postseason matches without allowing a goal.

Twenty-four consecutive tournament shutouts.

Head coach Randy Heethuis didn’t make the accomplishment more complicated than it needed to be afterward.

“It’s a credit to the girls,” Heethuis told MHSAA.com. “I know it is a cliché, but we just play one game at a time.”

That approach has produced something extraordinary.

More Than One Great Team

The easiest way to understand a dynasty is through its trophies.

Four seasons.

Four state championships.

But that doesn’t entirely explain what Unity Christian has built.

High school teams aren’t professional franchises. You can’t keep the same roster together indefinitely.

Players graduate.

New players arrive.

Roles change.

A freshman watching from the bench becomes a senior playing in a state championship game.

That’s what makes four consecutive championships so difficult.

The 2026 Crusaders weren’t simply the 2025 team playing another season.

They had to replace pieces, redistribute responsibilities and build their own identity while carrying expectations created by the teams before them.

And those expectations were enormous.

Anything short of a championship would have ended the streak.

Instead, this group produced arguably the most statistically dominant season of the four.

Perfect record.

One goal allowed.

Another championship.

What Remains

It is August now.

The spring sports equipment has been put away. Fall teams have taken over the fields. Another school year has begun at Unity Christian.

Eventually, another girls soccer season will arrive.

When it does, the Crusaders will face a challenge that seems increasingly absurd:

Do it again.

But that’s a question for next spring.

The 2026 team deserves to be remembered on its own.

This was a group that inherited a three-time defending state champion and somehow raised the standard.

A team that never lost.

Never tied.

Allowed one goal all year.

Didn’t allow any when the tournament began.

Won its district.

Won its regional.

Won its semifinal.

And then walked onto the field at Michigan State against a nine-time state champion and won again.

Four straight championships.

Fourteen in program history.

Twenty-four consecutive postseason shutouts.

At some point, calling it a great run isn’t quite enough.

Unity Christian girls soccer is in the middle of one of the defining stretches in the history of Michigan high school sports.

The 2026 Crusaders may have been its finest team yet.
