Rockford Claims Division 1 State Championship with 54–50 Win Over East Lansing

EAST LANSING, Mich. — In front of a packed crowd at the Breslin Center, the Rockford Rams delivered a dramatic fourth-quarter comeback to defeat the East Lansing Trojans 54–50 on Saturday and capture the MHSAA Division 1 boys basketball state championship. The victory marks Rockford’s first state title since 2003, ending a more than two-decade wait for the program.

The championship game lived up to its billing, featuring two of Michigan’s top teams in a defensive battle that remained tight from start to finish. East Lansing appeared to be in control entering the final period, holding a three-point lead after three quarters. But Rockford surged late, outscoring the Trojans 12–5 in the fourth quarter to seize the momentum and ultimately the title.

East Lansing star KJ Torbert, the state’s Mr. Basketball winner, did everything he could to keep the Trojans in front. Torbert poured in 28 points, attacking the rim and hitting key shots throughout the afternoon. Teammate Kingston Thomas added 10 points as East Lansing looked poised to repeat as state champions.

But Rockford refused to fold. The Rams tightened their defense in the final minutes, forcing difficult possessions and controlling the pace. With the game hanging in the balance, Rockford executed down the stretch, converting key free throws and finishing a late possession at the rim to extend the lead to four points in the final seconds.

When the final buzzer sounded, Rockford players and fans erupted in celebration as the Rams secured the 54–50 victory and the Division 1 crown.

For Rockford head coach Kyle Clough, the championship represents the fulfillment of a long-term vision. When he took over the program a decade ago, he famously printed a shirt declaring Rockford would win another state title — leaving the year as “20??.” On Saturday, those question marks were finally answered.

The Rams finished the season 25–3, while East Lansing ended a remarkable year 27–2 as the state runner-up.

In the end, the championship came down to resilience. Rockford weathered East Lansing’s star power, delivered the biggest quarter of its season in the final frame, and returned one of Michigan’s proudest basketball programs to the top of the state.
